Freedive on a World War II shipwreck
The Dori wreck is one of the best freediving spots in the Azores, being one of the most visited places by freedivers who come to visit the island of São Miguel.
This 130 meter ship is one of the Liberty Ships built in the United States that was present in the largest military operation in world history - Operation Overlord - off the coast of Normandy, during the Second World War, having found, many years later, its final resting place in the calm waters near the city of Ponta Delgada. Located just a few minutes boat ride from the city port and sunk at a depth of between 14 and less than 20 meters deep, this wreck has rested on the sand bottom for more than six decades and is an authentic Oasis of life for countless small species that find shelter in the hundreds of tubes and metal structures. Further up and through the still intact massive structures, large schools of Amberjacks, barracudas, Guelly Jacks and other pelagics surround this imposing artificial reef. The abundance of species normally seen combined with the incredible scenery that the wreck provides for freediving in this location makes this an experience not to be missed in the seas of the Azores.
